Sketchbook Tour 6

Book of ideas, textures and colours

I started this book project to fit my art practice into a busy schedule back in October - I wanted to experiment with book binding techniques and create sort of a library of patterns, marks and shapes using inks on thick drawing paper.

The plan was to create a book using limited supplies and using only a neutral colour palette, because I wanted it to be doable considering I didn’t have enough time for a more ambitious project. I tried a new way of attaching signatures to the cover and really loved how this one turned out - I sewed the signatures directly onto a piece of fabric and then attached the fabric to an old book cover using glue.

My thought process with using limited colour was probably influenced by the start of autumn where colours suddenly started looking dull and changes in seasons tend to affect my choices in art making.

But the more I was working on the book, the more colours started seeping onto the pages, well, I guess neutral palettes aren’t for me after all!

You can read here about the project in a little more detail:

What I really love about making my own art books is that I can still come back to change or add something. I only painted on one side of the paper to create the signatures, so the book still had a lot of blank pages to work on. A bit later I added two additional signatures using toned paper, printed photos and book pages. Then for the past several months I used the book to explore botanical and natural patterns, textures, collage and colours using a variety of papers - working on the book from start to finish has been quite a lengthy process!

This tour is slightly longer than usual, because of all the pages I added to he book, so you will be able to see the progression from almost no colour on the page to crazy neon pink pages!

I hope you enjoy the video and thank you for being here! :)
