Studio Notes: Creative hibernation
A slower time
May turned out to be a time when I had to slow down on both my art practice and writing - unplanned and due to a variety of personal reasons. I also missed several days on the 100 days project (again!). My first reaction to this slowing down was frustration, because I had so many plans and was so inspired to start a couple of new projects.
But then I realised that slower times are also creative times - in their own way. These periods allow me to “hibernate”, think and reflect. Usually I am coming up with the most exciting ideas after such a hibernation period, so it’s not as bad as it seems!
I was thinking a lot about my art, what do I want to do, and how do I see my practice in 3-5-10 years.
For some time I thought that I need to chase a specific idea of “being an artist”, but I think in the recent 6 months I came to the conclusion that I don’t want to fit in anywhere or to “break into” anything - I want to make the art I want to make and not the art that someone wants to see.
This is probably not the wisest position, but I think this is the right thing for me right now. I am exploring new exciting directions and finally all the threads are starting to make sense. Life is messy right now and I feel that I need to focus on myself in my art practice more than anything!
In order to get back into the flow again I started going through some of my older posts (always a good idea by the way). If you are in a similar headspace right now and look for additional inspiration, here’s what I plan to revisit:
I am also slowly browsing through my collection of creative prompts and looking for additional ideas.
Hopefully, this slower period is a foundation that will transform into something exciting this summer!
