I agree. I personally cannot when it comes to social media. It puts this pressure and I just feel like I become part of the problem when I consistently post and become part of the “noise”. I haven’t quite figured out how to put my art out there yet. Been debating on whether to actually start blogging on substack or not. Thank you for writing about this, it is very validating.

Thank you for sharing your experience Reggie! ❤️Same for me, I just don’t want to be a part of the noise. Substack is, of course, also sort of social media, but works best for me at the moment - I feel better producing longer content.

I love Laura Horn! Found her through word of mouth, not social. It's fascinating to see the breakdown of traffic sources.

I found her through Pinterest, I was attracted to her art and later way of teaching! I really love how she is very transparent about the business side! Thank you for your comment Jess!

Yes me too! And her whole slow, relaxing vibe is just not a great match for the quick gimmicky short form video style anyway

Thank you for this, Lisa. I feel the same way - social media is such a soul-draining effort.

Thanks for the post. I also find videos time consuming to make and prefer photos! To be honest posting pretty much anywhere these days seems to get much less traction than it used to!

Yes, I have the same feeling! It seems that the more content is out there, the more tiring it gets to “consume” it, and instead of slowing down, the platforms push for even more content 🥲

Just like you wrote ”just because it works for one doesnt mean it will work for another”, I’m one of those trying hard because I see other succeed… But in the end I’m just in a empty void of nothing. Even if I know this, I still trying over and over again 😩

I am so sorry for your experience, thank you for sharing! I think that instagram can work for some people, but not for others, and it’s ok. You don’t necessarily have to let go of it completely, just spend less time and explore alternatives! Wish you all the best in your journey ❤️

Well I stopped using Instagram. All those changes are not for me. 😊

"I believe it’s better to focus on other channels that you actually own - building a mailing list, curating a website, blog, portfolio, and creating personal connections with people" I couldn't agree more. The SM looks like a factory for the content. They first one you to be creators before. They don't want you to be an individual who aspires to do things, dream, or connect with anyone.

Oh, yes, factory is a great analogy! Thanks for your comment!

I couldn't agree more, ig is such a grind and because you can't always see what people you follow post it becomes discouraging to build good connections there. Laura Horn Podcast also motivated me like you, to reevaluate my strategy and find platforms where sharing is possible , and people actually talk to each other like we do here. It is so refreshing to no longer feel depend just from one platform.

I've never had what I would call success on IG. Most of my artwork was seen and sold via Facebook. But I don't like FB. I had an art biz, closed it when I started teaching art in a school setting (k-12) and now I'm out of the classroom again. I feel like I'm starting over... again. I just want to make art, teach art (but not in a school classroom setting) and sell art! Creating content has never done much for me.

Thanks so much for sharing your experience! I have never been active with my art on any social media platform, I mostly sold through word of mouth - friends, family and colleagues, but then again art has never been a main source of income for me, so I’m now figuring it out! Teaching is also something I am interested in!
